Weekend of Service at UC Davis Arboretum 2013

"Had a great time volunteering today! Hope everyone can have join us in the future!" - Ben Hu
California Native Plant GATEway Garden
Part 1
Part 2

We are seeking volunteers to assist with planting native plants in the new California Native Plant GATEway Garden at the east end of the Arboretum. This garden is currently under construction and will be planted in phases. Volunteers will contribute to this major project which will ultimately include over 25,000 new plants. The garden will serve as a welcoming new entry to the Arboretum and campus from downtown Davis. It will also be a beautiful teaching garden where visitors can learn more about local native plants and natural history.

For more information and questions, please contact Emily Griswold, ebgriswold@ucdavis.edu.

Southeast Asian Retreat 2013 - (SEA)ZE THE DAY!

Southeast Asian Retreat 2013 - (SEA)ZE THE DAY!

Southeast Asian (SEA) Retreat 2013 Group

About:

Every year, Southeast Asians Furthering Education hosts the Southeast Asian (SEA) Retreat. This weekend long event is aimed towards uniting and empowering Southeast Asian (American) identified students at the University of California, Davis. This retreat's purpose is to celebrate and validate the rich history and culture of an identity and community that is often misunderstood and disregarded. The various activities and workshops this weekend are designed to help participants discover what it means to be Southeast Asian themselves and to be Southeast Asian in the community.

What do we do?

This year's theme is (SEA)ZE THE DAY. Its purpose for the retreat is to motivate participants to take a step further with their activism and advocacy and work towards progressing the SEA Community. All too often, efforts to improve the community are hindered by personal biases, a lack of understanding of ourselves and of each other, and ignorance of issues that surround us. The retreat is not only a way for participants to learn more about themselves or build community, but it is also an opportunity to cultivate new ideas and break down barriers in a safe and welcoming space.

UC Davis SEA Graduation - Southeast Asian Graduation 2013

UC Davis SEA Graduation - Southeast Asian Graduation 2013

Who are we?

Southeast Asian Graduation Celebration (SEA Grad) commemorates graduating Southeast Asian students and their families. SEA Grad recognizes each student’s accomplishments as well as the struggles and sacrifices that they and their families have faced on their pathway to and beyond higher education.

With VSA and Crystal Huynh-Kim (President of the Vietnamese Student Association 2013)
With Wingsze Lam and Roger Moy - 2013

About:

While we share similar historical backgrounds, the Southeast Asian community encompasses many different ethnicities and identities. By coming together, we will build a network of Southeast Asian students that will lead our community beyond the University –acknowledging our differences as well as our potential for unity. This celebration is not only for our scholars –who are the role models of today, but also for the next generations in our families –our role models for tomorrow. Participate in the 4th Annual Southeast Asian Graduation (SEA Grad) Celebration ever at UC Davis!

UC Davis Vietnamese Student Association - 31st Annual Culture Show titled Subtext: Đọc Phần Ghi Chú (2013)

UC Davis Vietnamese Student Association - 31st Annual Culture Show titled Subtext: Đọc Phần Ghi Chú (2013)

31st Annual Culture Show titled Subtext: Đọc Phần Ghi Chú (2013)

About:

University of Califronia, Davis's Vietnamese Student Association invites you to come watch and enjoy its 31st Annual Culture Show titled Subtext: Đọc Phần Ghi Chú as it explores Vinh's struggle with understanding his identity, family, and place in the world. Don't miss out on this opportunity to see amazing acting, dancing, and singing!

Every year the proceeds from VSA's Culture Show goes directly to its annual philanthropy. This year, that philanthropy is Blue Dragon whose mission is to help kids in crisis by providing housing, education, medical and psychological services, and other great resources.

Synopsis:

Have you met Vinh? He's a 20-something Vietnamese male and, if his parents plan goes well, he'll inherit their newspaper company, the Viet Chronicles. If he had an OKCupid account (he doesn't) it would say he spends time out with nature, enjoys the comfort of a book, and is 5'8" (when in reality is only 5'7.5.") Oh, and somewhere in that mix of facts it would mention that he's on the Autism spectrum.

Who are we?

We are an organization on campus that strives to promote Vietnamese culture on and around campus to everyone interested in the Vietnamese culture; share current events and social issues surrounding the Vietnamese worldwide; and provide philanthropy to Vietnamese-based organizations year-round. We strive to continue the Vietnamese traditions, for fear of it becoming extinct as the new generation replaces the old. We hope to continue to strengthen and continue the Vietnamese language and culture! We can only do so with the participation and support of members!

The Vietnamese Student Association has been a club at UC Davis since 1981, and is among the most active Vietnamese Student Association in Northern California.

Celebration of a Spectacular Performance

What are the benefits of being involved in your organization?

We strive to continue the Vietnamese traditions, for fear of it becoming extinct as the new generation replaces the old. We hope to continue to strengthen and continue the Vietnamese language and culture! We can only do so with the participation and support of members! Other than that VSA provides a safe social space for anyone who wants to meet awesome people, participate in culture promoting events as well actively learn more about the Vietnamese Culture. It is never too late to join!

Does your organization collaborate with other student organizations?

Our organization does numerous collaborations with other ethnic organizations on campus throughout the year. Other than collabs with the organization on campus we also do mixers with other VSAs at other schools in Northern California.

Fun Facts:
VSA is a affiliate of a bigger organization called the UVSA of northern California. We work with other affiliate VSA groups in Northern California, on charity events and community events, to not only better and hold on the Vietnamese culture on our campus but also in our surrounding community.  Although VSA is a cultural club, we are also big on performing dance through our contribution in performing cultural dance around campus at big events such as APCN and Picnic Day.
